Locations for our missions are voted on annually by our Leadership Team, who conduct several scouting trips before coming to a decision. We are considered welcomed guests of the Dominican Government, and are always greeted by a group of politicians and health officials . Our patients are informed of our arrival and screened by local medical personnel before coming to our facilities.
Missions generally last 7 – 9 days and are structured as follows:
Day 1: Travel
Day 2: Set-up of Operating Rooms, Medical Clinic and Pharmacy
Days 3 – 6 or 7: Actively treating patients
Day 7 or 8: Recreation
Day 8 or 9: Travel
Our accommodations are usually modest, but we always supply our volunteers with the bare necessities: clean beds, hot and cold water, etc. Since all participants are volunteers who pay their own travel, room and board, we have at times chosen less austere accommodations, even resorts, if proximity and accessibility to the mission site are reasonable. Meals may be provided locally, but on occasions where we are traveling to remote locations and produce may be less reliable, we will bring our own cook to prepare our meals.
